Saigon River Pedestrian Bridge: Main Pier Concrete Pour Begins, Aiming for Sept 2 Completion

The Saigon River Pedestrian Bridge project has officially entered a critical structural phase with the first concrete pour for the main pier foundation. This milestone marks a significant step for Ho Chi Minh City’s new iconic landmark to accelerate toward its inauguration on National Day (September 2). On the afternoon of May 11, a delegation of city leaders led by Vice Chairman of the Municipal People’s Committee Bui Xuan Cuong and Head of the Municipal Party Committee’s Propaganda Department Duong Anh Duc conducted an on-site inspection. The delegation monitored the progress at pier TC2—a key component determining the overall quality, safety, and timeline of the entire project.

According to the My Thuan Project Management Board, the main bridge pier is one of the largest ever constructed on the Saigon River, surpassing many major cable-stayed bridges in both scale and construction volume. With a total surface area of approximately 1,800m², the TC2 pier foundation alone required over 5,764m³ of mass concrete for its initial pour. The process demands absolute technical precision, ranging from concrete temperature control to strict raw material quality management, ensuring long-term structural integrity. Notably, the pier’s design was meticulously calculated for aesthetics: even at the river's lowest tide, the pier base remains hidden, preserving the integrity of the unique "water coconut leaf" architectural theme in the heart of the city.

To ensure the project reaches the "finish line" on schedule, the site currently maintains a workforce of over 250 engineers and workers operating 24/7. Alongside on-site construction, steel girder modules weighing 25 tons each are being continuously transported from the factory to the Thu Thiem area. Representatives from the construction units and the sponsor, Nutifood, confirmed a tight master plan: completing two vital piers by June, towing and installing steel girders in August, and officially opening to traffic by September 2, 2026. This urgent working spirit has earned high praise from city leaders, standing as a symbol of community effort and responsibility.

During the inspection, Vice Chairman Bui Xuan Cuong emphasized that the pedestrian bridge is not merely a transport project but a cultural and architectural highlight that elevates riverside public spaces. It also serves as a pioneering project for a creative new investment model in HCMC—the "non-payment Build-Transfer (BT)" format—demonstrating the dedicated partnership of businesses in urban development. With a total length of 720m and an investment of nearly 1 trillion VND, the bridge is expected to become an ideal destination for residents and tourists alike, helping HCMC's urban landscape make a breakthrough in this new era.

SMC Concrete: A Reliable Partner in Quality

The success of this crucial milestone is attributed in no small part to the role of the material supplier. SMC Concrete is proud to be the strategic partner providing high-quality ready-mixed concrete for the Saigon River Pedestrian Bridge. To meet the stringent requirements of the mass concrete pour at pier TC2, SMC mobilized high-capacity batching plants and a dedicated fleet of mixer trucks, operating continuously to ensure a seamless concrete flow that meets all strength and slump standards. Being trusted for an iconic project with high technical complexity once again affirms the position and reputation of SMC Concrete in accompanying key infrastructure projects across Ho Chi Minh City.
